Job Description Under the supervision of the Center Medical Director and Center Management, the Center Apheresis Medical Specialist is responsible for ensuring donor eligibility, product integrity, and donor safety. This role oversees and performs plasmapheresis and leukapheresis procedures in compliance with FDA regulations, SOPs, and applicable state and federal guidelines. The specialist monitors donor status before, during, and after procedures, manages adverse reactions, and ensures high standards of care, safety, and regulatory compliance within the plasma center. Job Specifications Primary Responsibilities Ensure donor eligibility and continued donor health in compliance with FDA regulations and SOP guidelines Perform and oversee plasmapheresis and leukapheresis procedures Conduct donor physical examinations, medical histories, and eligibility assessments Prepare donors for procedures, explain processes, and address donor concerns Monitor donors during procedures and respond to adverse reactions Evaluate, manage, and document donor injuries and adverse events, including administering medications when required Operate and troubleshoot apheresis equipment to ensure accurate collection and processing of blood components Perform pre-donation screening and laboratory testing per procedural requirements Educate donors on health trends, procedure risks, and unacceptable test results Administer donor consent forms and ensure donor medical records are complete and accurate Review donor screening tests for continued eligibility Maintain equipment, supplies, sanitation, and readiness of the work environment Serve as a designated trainer for leukapheresis procedures Collaborate with quality management on continuous improvement initiatives Coordinate with center management on scheduling and staffing for leukapheresis procedures Support product logistics activities such as packing, labeling, and shipping when required Maintain donor and staff confidentiality and report unsafe conditions to management Perform additional duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficiency in venipuncture and management of vascular access Knowledge of apheresis techniques, equipment, and related medical conditions Strong assessment and clinical judgment skills Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills Ability to follow SOPs and work within a highly regulated environment Strong organizational, prioritization, and documentation skills Computer proficiency with web-based systems and Microsoft Word Ability to work independently and under general supervision once fully trained Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment Current CPR certification required Qualification in Apheresis (QIA) certification preferred Experience Minimum of 2 years of experience providing medical care and patient assessment Experience in therapeutic apheresis, plasma collection, or whole blood collection preferred Physical & Work Environment Requirements Work performed in a plasma center with exposure to biological fluids and infectious organisms Exposure to cold environments below 32°F in plasma freezers Standing and sitting for extended periods (2–4 hours at a time) Frequent hand and foot movement; occasional bending, squatting, and twisting Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE) Visual, hearing, and communication abilities sufficient to perform clinical duties safely
