Assistant/Associate Director of Planned Giving Position Title Assistant/Associate Director of Planned Giving Full Time/Part Time Full Time Division Office of Advancement Department Planned Giving Department Statement Colgate University, a top-ranked liberal arts college, is seeking an Assistant/Associate Director of Planned Giving to support planned and estate gift administration. Founded in 1819, Colgate is a small, highly selective residential liberal arts college for students of talent who are preparing for lives of leadership and productive citizenship. Colgate University enjoys a strong tradition of philanthropy and engagement, having successfully raised over $480 million from more than 34,500 community members during Passion for The Climb: The Campaign for Colgate, completed in 2012. On an annual basis, more than 56% of Colgate's alumni engage with the University through philanthropy, volunteering, or engaging at online and in person programs, including signature events like Reunion that draw more than 2500 alumni and guests. This tradition of philanthropy paired with strong levels of alumni affinity position Colgate well for even greater success, as the Vice President and his team prepare to achieve the goals of the recently announced $1 billion Campaign for the Third Century.
At this pivotal moment in the University's history, Colgate is seeking an Assistant/Associate Director of Planned Giving to play an integral role in supporting the Planned Giving and Advancement teams. This position is accountable for the proper execution, recording and administration of planned gifts, tracks overall planned giving outcomes, supports fundraising staff with planned giving proposals, processes gifts-in-kind, and is responsible for understanding gift acceptance policies and the stewardship of planned gifts .The successful candidate will possess strong communication and customer service skills, the ability to collaborate with a variety of internal and external entities, must be accurate and detail oriented, and possess relevant skills that can include experience in fundraising, administration, financial services, bookkeeping, or legal areas. Accountabilities Level of appointment will be determined by experience and education level.

Accountable for the proper execution and administration of planned gifts. Ensures planned gifts are accurately accounted for, properly received and correctly documented. Accountable for providing expert advice on technical aspects of planned giving, including acceptance of gifts-in-kind. Responsible for stewardship of planned gifts. Name Data Synthesis and Use Description Demonstrated expertise in relevant data sets sufficient to identify errors and inconsistencies in reports and data tables. Demonstrated expertise in data analysis sufficient to leverage effectiveness in pursuit of department goals. Demonstrated ability to identify key metrics, specify requirements in building these metrics and inform key decisions based upon the results of same. Name Customer Service/Problem Solving Description Demonstrated ability to anticipate and respond to requests and informational needs of assigned IA function. Ability to solve operational issues and suggest improvements for applicable IA functions. Name Stewardship Description Demonstrated knowledge of best practices within stewardship as related to planned giving. Demonstrated ability to report to and correspond with donors regarding planned gifts. Name Technology Description Demonstrated ability to effectively access and navigate relevant technology systems used in advancement such as databases, CRMs, etc. Name Planned Gift Administration Description Demonstrated ability to create and manage all forms of planned gifts (from inception to termination) including creating gift illustrations and gift agreements. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with vendors, attorneys, executors, trustees, and internal university offices on issues related to planned gifts and gift acceptance. Subject matter expert on planned gift acceptance, planned gift instruments, the probate process, and gifts-in-kind. Name Planned Gift Expertise Description Demonstrated expertise in planned giving vehicles such as life income arrangements, bequests, and beneficiary designations. Demonstrated understanding of income tax landscape and advantageous charitable gift vehicles. Demonstrated ability to articulate complicated giving vehicles to donors and prospective donors. Requirements Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • At least three years of professional experience in fundraising, non-profit administration, bookkeeping, accounting, legal, financial or related fields
  • Outstanding skills in oral and written communication
  • Familiarity or aptitude for tax law
  • Ability to connect well with volunteers
  • Must be well organized and a self-starter
  • Must be capable of working collegially with a diverse group of constituents on a daily basis Preferred Qualifications Planned Giving. legal, and/or fundraising experience Education Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and experience from which similar skills have been attained.
